Air Pollution and Health

Air Pollution and Health: A Round Table Discussion at Innocent Hearts Group

In an urgent call to action against one of the most pressing environmental issues of our time, Innocent Hearts Group of Institutions (IHGI), in collaboration with the Lung Care Foundation, organized a high-impact Round Table Discussion on "Air Pollution and Health" at Saffron Restaurant, IHGI Campus. The event served as a catalyst for cross-sector dialogue, bringing together a dynamic mix of participants including doctors, academicians, farmer representatives, panchayat leaders, youth delegates, and government officials.

This thought-provoking initiative aimed to foster understanding, bridge communication gaps, and develop collaborative strategies to tackle air pollution, especially in the agrarian context of Punjab and Northern India.

Objective: Bridging the Gap Between Policy, Science, and Ground Realities

The Round Table was conceptualized with a clear goal — to unite key stakeholders on a common platform and address the health impacts of air pollution through open discussion and actionable insights. By involving both decision-makers and grassroots representatives, the event encouraged solution-driven dialogue on one of India's most critical environmental and public health challenges.

 Key Stakeholders Present

The event witnessed a remarkable turnout from a variety of sectors, including:

  • Healthcare professionals and pulmonologists from local hospitals

  • Environmental and health science academicians

  • Government representatives from the Agriculture Department

  • Farmer unions and village Panchayat leaders

  • Youth leaders and students from Innocent Hearts Group

  • Representatives from Lung Care Foundation

Their participation brought diverse perspectives, offering a holistic view of the environmental crisis and possible interventions.

 Farmer Voices at the Forefront

A significant highlight of the session was the active involvement of farmer representatives, who openly shared their first-hand experiences with stubble burning, seasonal pollution, and declining air quality. Their inputs shed light on the ground-level challenges faced in transitioning to sustainable practices.

Some of the key issues raised included:

  • Lack of affordable alternatives to stubble burning

  • Delayed subsidies and limited access to eco-friendly machinery

  • Lack of awareness about long-term health risks associated with pollution

These candid discussions made it clear that policy recommendations must align with economic and social realities of the rural population.

Constructive Dialogue with Government Officials

Officials from the Agriculture Department responded with empathy and openness, acknowledging the practical challenges farmers face. They spoke about ongoing schemes, technological interventions, and training programs aimed at promoting sustainable agricultural practices, such as:

  • Happy Seeder and Super Seeder machines

  • Biodecomposer sprays for stubble management

  • Financial incentives for adopting green alternatives

The dialogue marked a rare and productive exchange between policymakers and ground-level stakeholders, underscoring the need for community-centric policy execution.

The Health Angle: Insights from Doctors and Experts

Doctors from leading hospitals presented alarming data on how air pollution impacts human health, especially:

  • Rising cases of asthma, bronchitis, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)

  • The long-term effects on children’s lung development

  • Increased instances of cardiovascular and neurological issues

  • Mental health implications due to environmental stressors

Experts from the Lung Care Foundation emphasized that air pollution is not just an environmental problem, but a silent health emergency that requires immediate collective action.

Youth Engagement: Advocating for a Cleaner Tomorrow

Students and youth representatives from Innocent Hearts Group actively participated in the discussion, posing intelligent questions and proposing grassroots awareness campaigns, such as:

  • Eco-clubs in schools

  • Community workshops in villages

  • Social media drives to inform peers and families

Their passionate involvement affirmed the role of youth as changemakers, ready to take charge of the planet’s future with knowledge and innovation.

 Key Takeaways and Recommendations

By the end of the discussion, the group arrived at a consensus on several actionable takeaways:

  1. Promote awareness at the grassroots level about health effects of pollution

  2. Strengthen implementation of government support schemes for farmers

  3. Invest in scalable, affordable technologies to manage stubble waste

  4. Foster school and college-led environmental initiatives

  5. Encourage private-public partnerships for health outreach in rural areas

The session concluded with a collective commitment to collaboration, education, and sustained engagement to protect both people and the planet
